Kimball Organ History

Installed in 1927, the W.W. Kimball Pipe Organ, Opus #6949, was commissioned and generously donated by Andrew and Mary Dole of Oak Park. At the time, it was the largest fully enclosed organ in the United States, and possibly the world, featuring four manuals, 117 speaking stops, and 5,466 pipes.
Designed by Dr. William Lester and built by the renowned W.W. Kimball Company, the organ incorporated elements from the church’s previous Hook and Hastings instrument, retaining much of its casework, façade, and interior pipework, all carefully revoiced. It was dedicated on October 9, 1927, and immediately became central to both worship services and community concerts.
The Great Kimball organ reflects the congregation’s commitment to music, culture, and community. Celebrated for its craftsmanship and historic significance, it continues to support liturgical services, concerts, and special events, standing as one of Chicago’s finest historic instruments.
